"Old Friend" Seems To Be A Wistful Reflection On A Past Relationship That Still Holds A Special Place In The Singer's Heart. Despite The Fact That They Have Both Moved On There Is Still A Sense Of Connection And Desire For Affection And Comfort. The Song Seems To Be A Melancholic Song About A Past Lover That The Singer Still Has Feelings For Despite The Fact That They Have Moved On And Are Now With Someone Else. The Lyrics Convey A Sense Of Nostalgia And Longing For A Time When They Were Together But Also A Sense Of Acceptance That Things Have Changed. The First Verse Describes A Situation Where The Two Of Them "nearly Drowned For Such A Silly Thing" Possibly Referring To The Intensity Of Their Past Relationship. Mitski Sings That She Has Someone Who Loves Her Better Now While The Other Person Has Finally Found Their Own "pretty Friend". Despite This She Still Wants To Meet With The Person At "Blue Diner" On Sunday. The Chorus Repeats The Invitation To Meet At The Diner To Talk About Nothing Indicating A Desire For Connection And Familiarity With This Old Flame. The Post-Chorus Simply Repeats The Word "Baby" Perhaps Emphasizing A Sense Of Intimacy And Closeness Between The Two. In The Second Verse Mitski Reveals That She Hasn't Told Anyone About Her Ongoing Feelings Just As They Had Promised Each Other. She Also Confesses That Whenever She Drives Through The City Where The Person Is From She Feels A Pang Of Emotion.
